AI-Enabled Reconfigurable Smart Antennas for Next-Generation RADAR Systems

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being integrated with advanced antenna technologies to enhance the sensing, adaptability, and decision-making capabilities of next-generation RADAR systems. This work presents an AI-enabled smart antenna framework that combines reconfigurable radiation patterns, multi-mode beam control, and data-driven inference for intelligent target localization and adaptive beam selection.

The proposed antenna employs electronically controllable radiation modes directed toward −50°, 0°, and +50°, enabling spatial diversity without requiring a conventional fully populated phased-array architecture. Received signal strength and mode-dependent antenna responses are utilized as spatial features for AI-based estimation of target direction, angular region, and relative distance. A convolutional neural network is employed to learn the nonlinear relationship between the received multi-mode signal characteristics and the corresponding target location parameters.

The proposed framework establishes a closed-loop sensing architecture in which antenna reconfiguration and AI-based interpretation operate cooperatively to improve spatial awareness and support autonomous beam selection. The system is experimentally evaluated using controlled angular and distance measurements to assess antenna radiation characteristics, directional discrimination, localization performance, and AI prediction capability.

The proposed approach offers a low-complexity pathway toward intelligent and adaptive RADAR front ends, particularly for applications requiring compact hardware, dynamic beam steering, target localization, and autonomous sensing. The study demonstrates the potential of integrating reconfigurable smart antennas with AI-assisted signal interpretation as an enabling technology for future cognitive RADAR, autonomous sensing, surveillance, and intelligent wireless sensing platforms.
